specialised massage - Manual lymphatic drainage
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a VERY gentle type of Massage that is a recognised tool for the management for the management of Lymphoedema - localised swelling caused by a compromised Lymphatic System. This treatment promotes the flow and draw of Lymph through the Lymph Nodes, helping improve the body's Immune System. It may help think of the localised swelling as a stagnant pool of water, which by unblocking will turn into a fresh running stream.
MLD is used to simulate the Lymphatic System, helping it clear and unblock itself. It helps free up Vessel Pathways that have been congested and influences that direction, flow and direction of Lymph. It naturally calms the Nervous System and removes Toxins and biological Chemicals, relieving any associated pain.
MLD is beneficial to dogs with a compromised Lymphatic System, especially those with a Swelling or Oedema - an accumulation of fluid. This could be due to recently have surgery, being on extended restricted or crate rest or having been bitten or stung. Due to it's calming and gentle nature, it is also beneficial to nervous dogs or those who suffer with anxiety, as well as older dogs.
What to expect and costs
MLD is a specialised treatment that consists of gentle, seemingly superficial massage strokes. It is a combination of gentle, rhythmical techniques and therefore it may appear like very little treatment is actually being performed. However, there will be lots going on under the skin
MLD treatment follows a structured sequence of techniques and typically takes longer than the usual massage treatment. Therefore a 1.5 hour appointment slot is required and is charged at £50, plus travel charges if a mobile appointment is required, in excess of 5 miles from Clinic Location.
